In "Moulin Rouge", the Baz Luhrmann film, breaks a character who claims to be Argentine and have narcolepsy, eccentric detail that surely was skipped by most viewers.
Gus Van Sant began his film "My Own Private Idaho" with one frame showing a dictionary in which we read "narcolepsy" and the definition of this disease.
The question is narcoleptic intone:
Is there who know their existence as well as the Doctors of the Institutes of Sleep?
Are there others or just a construction of literary fiction?
There continues to surprise, because there are never enough explanations we give one or two friends who might want to listen, a couple, husband, wife, mother, aunt, co-worker.
And we wanted them in the office next to us and the neurologist told loudly, it's true!
The patient has sleep, short sleep irrepressible, a few hours a day continuously useful without some naps. It is not laziness, it wanders in a sleepless night, is called "fragmented sleep". THE instant cause REM sleep paralysis, frightening phenomenon that leads many to believe in astral projection. No depression or temperament given to plunge into seas apathetic! No! Narcolepsy and this has been accompanied by other symptoms creating Gelineau's syndrome ...

Hello: I have similar symptoms, I talked to a doctor but I did not know that decir. No sleep anywhere but paralyzed me and is very ugly. I have 25 years and hope to find a neurologist to help me. Thanks for the info.

I recommend you ask your doctor for a referral to a neurologist, he carried out the studies necessary to diagnose you. There are medications that relieve these symptoms. Luck!

Nik, Laura: Yes, the hallucinations are also part of Narcolepsy, differ from psychosis and that a neurologist explains it very well. Not to panic, no cure, but good treatments
A fondness for both

Know? For years before I knew I had, I went to the specialty of neurology of the health service, I explained to Dr. about my dream (not yet had cataplejias total) and he said quote: Tomato this before bed, is for sleep better .....-no more-I said prescribed imipramine, ran to check on a vademecum and what a surprise because I took antidepressants .... I'm not depressed! I thought ... well maybe a little but within the "normal" Obviously I did not take it, let me explain without the drsita this that wave ... Now I know that antidepressants with some of the medication they require, but also know there's something called "sleep clinics" are part of diagnostic tests to determine the extent to which we are so a neurologist and we medicate certificate ....
As it is written in the blog my dear Bella, yet few know of the narc.e even if covered in a film is very vague information and myths do not you think? eh I met some tv programs here in Mexico where they talk about it, but nobody seems to see them, just like us ..... intersados Narcolepsy addition I have another rare disease of the skin that no one knows well, feeling a freak and misunderstood is nothing new for me .. Fortunately I could meet you and others in the network, and believe me not feeling alone q help too ....
Please contact me babe! Kisses from Mexico to Argentina! Saludines to all!

Letty, your story is important to me. I also feel less alone if you're here.
Inipramina dose is not to go straight to REM, so we "lift" and we can come before the Norem. But it must be a minimum dose and according to each. We are all different. Freaks, that's for others and are a minority ... in Argentina have not even seen documentaries bad! And the institutes are expensive ...
And as I said and I repeat: it is so easy to confuse with people who are sleepy and vague.
Greetings to you and to Mexico from here!

Hi all, I hope you are well, better or recovering. I'm narcoleptic but I am very interested every time I hear something about these rare diseases. But it is clear that the only thing unusual here is the disease or those who do not understand that this is this is a disease. I was interested in everything they say because I have seen long and interesting programs for this disease in the channel DISCOVERY HOME AND HEALTH. A big hug for everyone. Marcelo from Uruguay

Hello Marcelo and thank you for your interest. You do not suffer narcolepsy but being informed of this and other diseases "rare" helps us all. Welcome!
A hug.

Hello, a question for all you who are the experts. What causes imipramine on REM sleep, removes it, what power or control and which gives results, you can sleep better at night?
November 6th 2009 at 17:41
Hello narcolepsy took 32 years and I live in Puerto Rico, my case is worse than yours because no medically effect me. I have strong hallucinations and realizarme neurosurgeon sent me to an MRI (hypothalamus). No effect me medically. Mostly I have been prescribed antidepressants but these make me "serious". I wonder in this forum to communicate with Rocio.

Hi all! It's great to have found this site, although it would be more correct to say that Bella through your site found me. There is nothing more cieto the saying that "evil of many, little comfort," but in my case, at such solitude that I find in the battle to live better every day, is a balm to discover in the words captured in this page, that being narcoleptic does not make me a "weirdo", but part of a group of courageous people who decide to never give up. To all, thank you. And hopefully we can keep in touch. A separate thanks to Bella, for your generosity and dedication. Greetings from Patagonia Argentina. Lullaby

I also got the opportunity to make a section or as called by a TV show, but as mentioned before, I need to find the neurologist with experience in the field .... I have a hard time but I'm calling all doctors and q means I can and when I can ... I know I will get there ..... PQ guide q and q nadieconoce many of the disease or condition ....!! echo not yet if you call disease or condition?? you comment on my fb, take care and thanks for my group to integrate ...!! I'm just a young single mother wanting to go ahead and listen to my voice!!

Dr. Sanchez Longo (Hospital del Maestro) Hato Rey, older but good. It's frustrating, I have 2 babies, a job which I'm late every day, a car I hardly use q and a life that seems taken from a surrealist work! I hate sleeping, I hate my dreams, nobody understands me is hopeless and just give you pills to stay awake! No need to stay awake, I need to sleep like everyone else!
24th January 2012 at 22:45
People, is a neuroscience center that has an analysis of sleep in the building next to the hospital teacher. She does not treat patients but may refer to one that can make life easier. As I said in previous comments I lived some years taking Provigil, mienstras could use it to keep my life profecional active, having a job and meet the commitments of this.
Friends, do not find the cause of narcolepsy, so be very difficult to find a way to cure it. We must learn to live with it. I advise you to use the drug by the time they need to adjust their lives to this condition. Seek help from a mental health profecional, in need ... My psychiatrist is Nelsa Rodriguez (787-256-0273), is in the marginal Loiza Valley. She conose our problem and will understand, guide them and help them adjust their lives to be happy even with this condition.
For my part I can not work because the medicine was vital to be able to do. My sleep problems and other complications brought me dangerously herniated discs in both the upper back as in the low and chronic depression for which I am slowly emerging thanks to accept my reality and how I have to live! This combination made me approve social insurance since Dec, 2011. The process was very fast and I had the data from my psychiatrist, pulmonologist and physiatrist ... All test results, etc ... Since 2005 I got some sleep 5 tests clearly showed that my condition, some MRI also shows the condition of my records and the views of all the psychiatrists who saw the end of that time! Melanie, do not let your peace of mind is affected by this, you have to accept it and live well!
God Bless you

Hello Fernando, I share with you the subject of modafinil, and chronic depression, like many other narcoleptic ... but what caught my attention of your post was the issue of disc herniations: I with my just turned 36 years, I have three herniated discs, cervical and lumbar two. I would like you to tell me what is the link between narcolepsy and hernias, if you found it, and how to improve because I am in search of ways to improve my quality of life. I tell you the last cervical hernia cause me headaches, dizziness, ringing, and I was referred to a physiotherapist does RPG (global postural rehabilitation) which is a very effective technique for these cases. Any information you can provide, will be more than grateful, and feel free to ask me anything. Greetings and have a beautiful day. Mariana. Patagonia Argentina.
